Free Concert at Nebraska State Historical Society's Burlington Depot

The public is invited to attend a free outdoor concert at the Nebraska State Historical Society’s Burlington Depot on Sunday, June 7. The show will feature flamenco classic guitar music performed by Daniel Martinez. This unique performance is part of the Willa Cather Foundation’s 60th annual Spring Conference, which celebrates the 100th publication anniversary of Cather’s third novel, The Song of the Lark. This concert is a homage to the novel’s beloved Moonstone musician Spanish Johnny, a talented folk singer and guitarist.

Martinez’s performance will draw from a number of Latin American folk traditions. This open-air music event will be something the entire family can enjoy. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will take place at the Red Cloud Opera House.

Daniel Martinez is originally from Iquitos, Peru. Growing up surrounded by the ocean and the Amazon, Martinez first picked up the guitar as a young teen at the encouragement of his mother. He came to Nebraska to attend Union College, where he studied English as a Second Language and became serious about perfecting his talent. He has performed across the U.S., Canada, and South America. Martinez has trained for multiple national guitar competitions and won several. He is featured on the Nebraska Arts Council touring roster and was the Community Supported Artist for the Lincoln Arts Council in 2013. He also teaches guitar at Union College as well as offering private and group lessons.

The Nebraska Arts Council, a state agency, has supported this arts event through its matching grants program funded by the Nebraska Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts and Nebraska Cultural Endowment.
