Announcing AUDITIONS for BURNING BARN by A.P. Andrews
Part II of The Nebraska Cycle
Monday and Tuesday, June 13-14
7-9 pm
Rehearsals begin on the 15th, and will take place Monday-Friday at the Opera House from 7-9:30 pm, depending on the availablity of the cast. Actors will not be called to every rehearsal!
Come in prepared to read from the script, which will be provided at the audition. No advance preparation necessary.
Please be able to provide your weekly schedule, including any times you will be gone for longer.
The play will be performed July 22-24.
Roles available:
3 women (1 in her 50s, 2 in their 20s)
4 men (1 in his 50s, 1 in his 30s, 2 aged 17-25)
A stage manager will be needed two weeks before at almost every rehearsal- needed on book and for backstage cueing before each show.

Synopsis: The Hawkins family home has burnt down- and that’s not all. Ethel Hawkins is trying desperately to hold her family together while her husband Van is having an affair with a younger woman, her daughter Jenny wants to move away to the city, and her son Timothy is in love with a girl much too popular for him. One fire may have burned out, but another is just getting started. Set amidst the volatile, mood-altering, ever-changing backdrop of the rural Nebraska countryside, Burning Barn is a study of family, of boredom, of adultery, of repressed anger, of young love, of hope, and of the ties that bind.

The Nebraska Cycle
THE NEBRASKA CYCLE is a ten play cycle written by Superior, Nebraska native A.P. Andrews about life in modern-day rural Nebraska. The first three plays in this cycle, ABBY IN THE SUMMER, BURNING BARN, and THE GIRL WITH THE RED BALLOON, will be performed this summer at the Hastings Community Theater, Red Cloud Opera House, and Superior Community Theater, respectively. Tickets can be bought individually from the theaters- box office numbers are listed below. A special, 3-Show Pass to all three performances at a discounted rate is available by calling the Red Cloud Opera House- more information is provided at the bottom of this page!
PART I: ABBY IN THE SUMMER at the Hastings Community Theater Directed by Christine Cottam Abigail Bergson is a waitress at a small-town Nebraska diner- a senior in high school, top of her class, and on her way to college in the city. During her last summer at home, she falls for a local farm boy, causing her life to fly perilously off track. A motley crew of diner regulars attempt to guide Abby as she tries to seize control of her own destiny- all while remaining true to herself and to where she comes from. Abby in the Summer is a coming-of-age story for modern day Middle America, touching on themes of young love, regret, and ultimately, self discovery. But when a mysterious little girl appears at the gas station south of town and strange things start to happen in the community, Bill is brought face to face with the one thing he fears most. Cows fall from the sky, robberies and twisters ravage the otherwise calm streets of Jaconda, and it's anybody's guess who will be standing in the end. This is a side of the Great Plains you've never seen before- a dark, whimsical tale of love and betrayal, of new friendships and fear: all caused by a little girl with a red balloon. “Who Murdered Elvis?”

The year is 1974 and Elvis has just released “Help Me.” He began a very successful tour in Ft. Worth and is making his way north. The Elvis caravan is driving through Red Cloud on their way to Omaha. He plans to stop for a brief time, have a meal, sign some autographs, and take the “Cather Tour” but the Mayor and local Big Shots want to have a meet and greet. Something happens and the tour is halted, but the real question is, “Who Murdered Elvis?”
