Visual Antithesis
Red Cloud Opera House
413 N WEBSTER ST
Red Cloud, NE 68970
United States
The Red Cloud Opera House is proud to welcome Kearney artist Daniel Garringer to our gallery in March! Garringer's acrylic paintings capture the fleeting details of a rural life on a large scale: towels snapping on the line, the sunken face of a jack-o-lantern in November, the active decay of old paint. This exhibit encourages the viewer to reflect on the beauty and ephemeral nature of the ordinary.
The sum of our experiences influences how we subjectively see the world around us. Our
senses, taste, touch, smell, allow us to distinguish differences and often gives us a more
objective view of our world. A color could be aesthetically pleasing yet subjectively unpleasant
to another. Our emotional experiences may be incongruent with our physical senses. The
human experience is an ongoing Antithesis of ideas, beliefs and encounters. Much like life,
Visual Antithesis is the contrasting between hopefully visually pleasing elements with thought
provoking thematic opposites. ~ Daniel Garringer
An artist's reception will be held at the Red Cloud Opera House gallery on Friday, April 4, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Be sure to join us for Karen Russell's reading and talk after the reception! Many of these pieces are for sale, and limited numbers of prints will also be available in our gallery. Gallery sales not only support the artists in our communities, but also support the programming at the Red Cloud Opera House and Gallery.
Programming at the Red Cloud Opera House is made possible through a basic support grant from the Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Cultural Endowment.
About Daniel Garringer
Artist Daniel Garringer's earthy, rural lifestyle has been a consistent influence on his artistic style. His paintings and drawings often depict themes based on his strong belief in absolutes and shared common experiences. Images are often manipulated in hopes that the viewer will be drawn into the image long enough to realize the underlying theme(s) expressed within each piece.
Born in Nebraska City, Garringer has been a lifelong resident of Nebraska. He attended Kearney Public Schools, where his high school Art teacher, Jack Shofstall, introduced him to the works of Andrew Wyeth, an exposure that has continued to influence Garringer's style. He received his Bachelor of Arts in K-12 Art Education from Kearney State College where he worked under the supervision of exceptional professors like Jon Dinsmore, Elmer Holzricher, Jack Karraker, Keith Lowry, Larry Peterson, and Ray Schultz. Garringer also holds a Masters in Art Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He has actively supported the visual arts in the Kearney community with happenings such as Art in the Park, which he directed for a number of years. After thirty combined years in Art Education at Amherst and Kearney, Garringer is now pursuing a full-time studio art career.
His work has been awarded recognition in numerous shows across the state as well as Iowa, Kansas, and Wisconsin. He works out of his home studio and gallery located Northwest of Kearney, Nebraska.
