“She was nearly as strong as I”: Being Woman in the Workplace
Come to the August meeting of the Panhandle Business and Professionals for a special session on the life and work of Willa Cather. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Cather and about a vibrant women’s organization in Scottsbluff, NE.
My Ántonia follows the lives of many different women, who make different choices, and experience different professional or domestic lives. Lena Lingard becomes a seamstress, while Tiny Soderball runs a lodging house in Seattle and later at a gold-mining camp in Alaska. Ántonia remains near Black Hawk, eventually raising a large family of children on a farm. How have the lives of working women in Nebraska changed since Cather’s time? What echoes from My Ántonia can be found in today’s experiences as women?
