Join author Steven Rothenberger in the Red Cloud Opera House gallery as he talks about his first full-length book, Scottsbluff in ’62: A Rock 'N' Roll Retrospective of Small Town America. Beginning in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, the cruisin’ capital of western Nebraska, the 60s music scene is quickly expanded to reflect rock ‘n’ roll on a regional and national basis with mentions of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and the Woodstock Music Festival. A member of the Nebraska Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Rothenberger portrays the 1960s as a magical time when simple rock ‘n’ roll melodies helped a nation endure a war and accept the rapid sociological and political changes that characterized this decade.
Steven J. Rothenberger is a professor emeritus of biology, University of Nebraska at Kearney. He has published more than 35 scientific papers for professional journals and has written popular articles for Nebraskaland, the Midland, and the Platte Valley Review. He was coeditor for the book, “A Presidential Visit,” and senior editor and contributing author of “A Prairie Mosaic: An Atlas of Central Nebraska’s Land, Culture, and Nature,” selected in 2001 as an award winning Notable Government Document by Library Journal. He considers himself a student of the prairie and popular culture of the Great Plains.
Scottsbluff in '62 is available in the National Willa Cather Bookstore or online.
